Our History

The Chapel began significantly from 1986 under the Religious Studies Department. It was known then as "The Protestant Chapel". The memberships of the church were made up of Protestants in the university community. However, the majority of the Christian students on campus worshipped at the Common Services at the Naraguta hostel of the university under the umbrella of the University Christian Fellowship (U.C.F).

In 1988, the Vice-chancellor of the University, Professor O. Onazi, set up a committee chaired by Dr. Adamu Idama to re-organize the Protestant Chapel to increase its acceptability to the Christian Community on campus. Dr. Idama canvassed the idea to the executive of the U.C.F. and gained their support. Consequently, the students joined the Chapel. The first full time Chaplain of the Chapel -Rev. Daniel Bitrus was appointed by the committee.

The Chapel became autonomous and ceased to be under the Religious Studies Department. The activities of the Chapel was supervised and supported by a Board of Elders under the chairmanship of Dr. Adamu Idama. Services were conducted in the Law auditorium and later moved to the multipurpose auditorium.

In 1990, Rev. D. Bitrus left the Chapel and Apostle Idama became the Acting Chaplain. The name "Protestant Chapel" was changed to "The Chapel of Faith" with the motto "Holding forth the word of life". The mode of worship became more Pentecostal in nature with emphasis on prayers and the Word of God. Before long manifestations of the gifts of the Holy Spirit became a regular occurrence in the meetings. Reverend Danjuma Byang was later appointed as Chaplain.

In 1991, a new Board of elders was elected with Dr. (now Professor) Tim Oyetunde as Chairman. Other members of the Board were: Mr. E. Ojoru, Dr. C.O. Obioma, Mrs. R. S. Ede, Mr. V.I.M. Madubuko, Mr. S. Wada, Mr. F. Faturoti, Mr. B. Ekaahinu, Mr. C. Agosaah, Mrs. J. Umolu and Mrs. E. Ibu. Later in the year the building of the Chapel at the permanent site of the university commenced. Successive board of elders made reasonable contributions to the Chapel building project. By the first Sunday of September 2001, the building had been roofed and worship services as well as other activities moved there.

The Chapel has grown spiritually, structurally and numerically throughout the past years. It has evolved into a full fledged church with many arms (units) to increase effectiveness.
